The Red Sea crisis has spread beyond the Asia-Europe network and has affected the worldwide supply chain
30 Jul 2024
Maersk has stated that disruptions in Red Sea shipping have expanded beyond trade routes in the Far East and Europe to impact its entire global network. The company noted that the effects of these disruptions extend beyond the main routes, causing congestion on alternative pathways.
It is worth mentioning that Maersk and other shipping companies have been rerouting their ships via the Cape of Good Hope since December to avoid Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. This has led to longer voyage times and consequently higher shipping costs.
In its statement, Maersk reported that ports across Asia, including Singapore, Australia, and Shanghai, are experiencing schedule disruptions for ship arrivals due to the Red Sea crisis. It also mentioned that delays at key hubs in Southeast Asia are causing disruptions at Australian ports and increasing ship wait times.
Despite all this, Maersk has confirmed that global demand for ocean shipping remains strong. The company is working to address the disruptions faced by its customers through various measures, including providing additional shipping containers.
