The Suez Canal took a major step toward restoring the passage of mega container ships today, as the vessel CMA CGM OSIRIS, operated by the French shipping giant CMA CGM, successfully transited the New Suez Canal as part of the southbound convoy. The ship, en route from Singapore to Alexandria, carried a total gross tonnage of 154,000 tons.
This is the first large container vessel to transit the canal from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait since March 2024, following a temporary halt due to regional challenges.
The vessel boasts impressive dimensions, 366 meters in length, 51 meters in width, with a draft of 49 feet and can carry up to 15,500 TEUs.
CMA CGM OSIRIS is also the first vessel to benefit from the 15% discount announced by the Suez Canal Authority in May, which applies to container ships with a net tonnage exceeding 130,000 tons, whether loaded or empty. The incentive is available for three months, aiming to encourage the return of mega vessels to the canal and reinforce its strategic position as a global trade route.
