The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has announced a 15% discount on transit fees for container ships with a net tonnage of 130,000 tons or more, whether loaded or empty. The discount will take effect on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and will remain in place for 90 days.
According to the SCA, this initiative responds to rising demand from shipowners and operators, and aims to encourage major shipping lines to resume using the Suez Canal. The announcement follows recent positive security developments in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, including the U.S. declaration of an end to military operations against the Houthis in Yemen, and an agreement to halt attacks on commercial vessels.
Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, stated that the Authority is pursuing an ambitious strategy to modernize and expand its maritime and logistics services. He expressed readiness to establish partnerships with leading global maritime companies, and highlighted opportunities for deeper cooperation with Italian firms in the sector. His comments were made during a meeting with Italian Ambassador Michele Quaroni in Ismailia on Tuesday.
