Russian Missile Strike Damages MSC Containership in Odesa Port

On March 1, a Russian ballistic missile strike targeted the port of Odesa, Ukraine, damaging a foreign-flagged container ship, according to the regional government.

The feeder vessel MSC Levante F was in port at the time and sustained damage from the explosion, Governor Oleh Kiper confirmed. Two port workers were injured in the attack.

Odesa recently resumed container shipping operations after years of disruption due to Russian strikes on civilian shipping. Since the start of its invasion in 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted merchant vessels and used missile and drone attacks to damage port infrastructure in Odesa and along Ukraine’s Danube River.

The MSC Levante F (formerly Maya 2) is a 1,100 TEU capacity containership built in 2006. It was acquired in October 2021 as part of MSC’s efforts to expand its market share.
