48-Hour Strike Halts Operations at Port of Rotterdam

The Port of Rotterdam — Europe’s largest seaport — experienced a 48-hour strike by mooring and securing workers, who protested over wages and demanded a 7% pay increase.

The FNV trade union stated that all employees of the two main mooring companies, International Lashing Services and Matrans Marine Services, took part in the strike, which brought operations at the port to a complete standstill.

Following the disruption, Maersk Line warned its customers about possible shipment delays between October 8 and 10, and activated contingency plans to reduce the impact on transport and service operations.

The affected terminals included:
APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Hutchison Ports Delta II, ECT Delta, and Rotterdam World Gateway.

The strike resulted in several effects, including:

  • Higher shipping costs as vessels are rerouted to other ports.

  • Delays in cargo deliveries across multiple destinations.

  • Congestion at alternative ports, such as Hamburg and southern European ports.
